MARHABA VINTAGE ONLY WORKS IN 14K GOLD FILLED AND 14K SOLID GOLD FOR THE CORE COLLECTION. OCCASIONAL GOLD PLATED PIECES IN THE REPURPOSED DESIGNER COLLECTION.
GOLD FILLED - This consists of a layer of genuine solid gold mechanically bonded to a base metal (example: brass). This mechanical bond allows for the layer of gold to last for many years instead of tarnishing. Contains at least 5 microns of gold, however, Marhaba Vintage gold filled jewels actually contain 9 microns of gold, which means it has more than 100x of gold content than traditional gold plated jewelry. This is what makes Marhaba Vintage unique, in that our gold filled jewelry has 9 microns of gold whereas most jewelry businesses use 5 microns. Gold filled jewelry is great for those with sensitive skin, as the layer of gold is so thick that it is hypoallergenic and resistant to tarnish if taken care of properly. It is the closest to solid gold.
GOLD PLATED - Gold plated jewels are the most affordable in the market. They typically only contain less than 0.05 microns of gold. It is electroplated on, which is a very quick process which means the jewelry will be very prone to tarnishing and the layer of gold will wear away quickly. It is not ideal for sensitive skin.
SOLID GOLD - Solid gold jewelry comes in different karats. 24k, 18k, 14k, etc. Each karat amount stands for the amount of allows mixed in with pure gold. 24k karat gold is the most pure gold with no alloys mixed in, however, this means that the gold is far too soft and cannot be used for jewelry. 18k gold is 75% pure gold, and 25% other alloys mixed in to make the jewelry more durable for every day wear - it is done by dividing 18/24 to achieve 75%. 14k gold is the best solid gold for everyday wear as it is very durable and will last you forever. It is the most ethical and sustainable in that you will not fall into an endless cycle of purchasing jewelry that will tarnish - and your jewels will last you a lifetime and more!
GOLD VERMEIL - Gold vermeil is known for using sterling silver as the base metal. It contains 2.5 microns of gold electroplated onto a sterling silver base. It is okay for sensitive skin, however, it is still not as ideal as gold filled or solid gold.
